Two Israeli Embassy Staff Killed in Washington DC Shooting
Washington, D.C. – May 22, 2025 – Two Israeli embassy staff members, Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Lynn Milgram, were fatally shot outside the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday night, May 21, 2025, at approximately 9:05 PM local time. The suspect, identified as 30-year-old Elias Rodriguez from Chicago, was taken into custody, and authorities are investigating potential ties to terrorism.
According to law enforcement officials, Rodriguez shouted “Free Palestine” after being detained and informed police where he discarded the weapon used in the attack. The shooting occurred as Lischinsky and Milgram, described as a couple on the verge of engagement, were leaving an event at the museum. The Israeli embassy in the U.S. released a statement expressing devastation, noting that the victims were “in the prime of their lives” and describing the incident as a terrorist attack.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar linked the shooting to “antisemitic incitement” following the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel, which killed approximately 1,200 people and led to over 250 hostages being taken. Israel’s ambassador to the U.S., Yechiel Leiter, called the attack an assault on Israel, the Jewish community, and “the U.S. itself.” Sa’ar accused some European leaders of contributing to a “toxic” climate through “blood libels,” though he faced confrontational questions from media during a press conference in Jerusalem.
U.S. authorities, including the Metropolitan Police Department and the Department of Homeland Security, are investigating the homicides. Chief Pamela A. Smith confirmed the suspect’s statements and the recovery of the weapon. President Donald Trump, briefed on the incident, described it as “sad” and suggested it was motivated by antisemitism.
The attack comes amid heightened tensions due to Israel’s ongoing military operations in Gaza, which followed the 2023 Hamas attack. Recent Israeli actions include a three-month blockade on Gaza, with limited humanitarian aid recently allowed, according to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The conflict has fueled global protests and debates, with “Free Palestine” becoming a rallying cry for Palestinian supporters.
Jewish community organizations in the U.S. have increased security measures in recent years, particularly since October 2023, with armed guards now common at synagogues and other institutions. Following the shooting, local Jewish groups indicated plans to further bolster security.
The investigation is ongoing, with authorities examining the motive and circumstances of the attack. The incident has sparked diplomatic and public reactions, with calls for addressing rising antisemitism and ensuring the safety of diplomatic personnel.
