BENGALURU: The Bharatiya Janata Party and Congress leaders are at each other over Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s statement “no need to wage a war against Pakistan’ while in Hassan, a stronghold of Janata Dal Secular (JDS), BJP and Congress unite and defeated a no-confidence motion on Monday moved against JDS City Municipal Council president Chandregowda.
It is to be noted here Janata Dal Secular (JDS) and BJP are alliance partners in State and at the national level. JDS State president H.D. Kumaraswamy, MP representing Mandya Lok Sabha seat, is Union Minister of Large Scale Industries in Narendra Modi cabinet.
The no-confidence motion was moved by JDS to dislodge its president Chandregowda who refused to step down from the post. In the no-confidence motion against CMC president, 35 councillors excluding CMC president Chandregowda, were voted. Party-wise break-up includes-JDS-17, BJP-13, Congress party-2 and 3 independents. Hassan Lok Sabha member, MLC and Hassan MLA take the voting tally to 38 in the CMC.
In the voting, 21 voted against no-confidence and 16 voted in favour of no-confidence motion. It is said 13-councilors belonging to BJP reportedly voted against the no-confidence motion.
Hassan is a strong hold of JDS and its national president and former Prime Minister H.D. Devegowda belongs to the district. He represented Holenarsipura assembly seat in Hassan district in the Legislative Assembly and also as a Hassan Lok Sabha. In the current assembly, four MLAs of Hassan belong to JDS, two BJP and a lone Congress MLA.
After winning the no-confidence motion, Chandregowda attributed his success in the no-confidence motion to the support extended to him by BJP former MLAs Preetham Gowda and Hassan Lok Sabha member Shreyas Patel belonging to the Congress party.
Chandregowda stated “I approached Preetham Gowda and Shreyas Patel seeking their support since JDS councilors were served whips by the party. JDS councilors are mentally with me” and said “During my tenure as president of Hassan CMC, I discharged my duties with an allegation of corruption and transparency was maintained.”
