Nellore: The Indian Space Research Organisation is preparing for the launch of its latest Earth observation satellite, EOS-09, aboard the PSLV-C61 launch vehicle.
The mission is tentatively scheduled for May 19, 2025, from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota.
EOS-09 has the facility to capture high-resolution images of the Earth’s surface, which would function well in all weather conditions day and night. The satellite’s advanced imaging capabilities would enhance the nation’s surveillance and monitoring operations.
ISRO sources said EOS-09 would play a crucial role in strengthening surveillance along the India-Pakistan border. Its deployment is being expedited in the immediate aftermath of the terrorist attack on civilians in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.
Its chairman, V Narayanan, had hinted last week about India plans to deploy an additional 100 to 150 satellites over the next three years to bolster national security, strengthen border monitoring, and improve coastal surveillance.
At an event in Chennai, Narayanan stated that the current constellation of approximately 55 operational satellites was insufficient for a nation with vast territorial borders and a 7,500-km-long coastline. An expanded satellite network would ensure more comprehensive and real-time coverage across the country.
Meanwhile, ISRO officials said final preparations for PSLV-C61 and EOS-09 mission are under way, and the launch date would be confirmed soon.
