In a heartbreaking incident near Thane, at least five passengers died after falling off a moving express train. The mishap occurred near Mumbra railway station and involved the Mumbai-Lucknow Pushpak Express. The train was packed with passengers, many of whom were standing near the doors, some even clinging to the sides due to the heavy rush. Around 12 people reportedly fell off the train while it was passing through the Diva-Mumbra section, a particularly narrow and congested stretch of track. Railway officials have confirmed that five passengers lost their lives. The condition of others who fell remains unclear. Rescue and medical teams were rushed to the scene soon after the alarm was raised.
Sources say the tragedy resulted from severe overcrowding. Preliminary investigations suggest passengers standing near the doors lost their balance and fell as the train sped past a curve. A spokesperson from Central Railway said that the exact cause of the accident is still under investigation. However, they acknowledged that overcrowding appears to be the most likely reason. The authorities have promised a full probe and are expected to release a detailed statement soon. The incident has once again raised serious questions about train safety and the handling of peak-time crowding on long-distance routes. Meanwhile, following the accident, the Railway Board has decided that all trains under manufacturing for Mumbai’s suburban network will have automatic door closure facilities. Additionally, all rakes in service will be redesigned to include door closure facilities in all trains of the Mumbai suburban network.
